Career Ready has helped me to face my fears with the support from my mentor

My professional and personal outlook has been changed forever because of Career Ready.

Who are you?

My name is Emily Wilkinson and I’m a student at St John Fisher Academy. I’m the runner up in the science category of this year’s AstraZeneca STEM Student of the Year Award.

Describe yourself before you started the programme

I wasn’t very confident – I knew what I wanted to do but my internship gave my invaluable experience I would never have been able to gain myself.

I would never have been able to stand up and present before the programme. My professional and personal outlook has been changed forever because of Career Ready.

What was the most important influence you had during your time on the programme?

My mentor Emily Smith helped me to plan my next steps and figure out what I actually needed to do to achieve my ambitions.

She helped me build up my confidence and allowed me to believe I can achieve whatever I want to – she even allowed me to follow her pregnancy, knowing I had ambitions to be a midwife. I believe I have the best mentor ever!

What skills have you gained?

I’m confident and able to meet new people and feel comfortable enough to introduce myself. I’ve gained skills in public speaking – something I never though I could have done. My communication skills had improved and I have a future plan nailed down.

Career Ready has helped me to face my fears with the support from my mentor.

What does winning this award mean to you?

It’s a tremendous, unbelievable achievement. Being a runner up is something I can be proud of forever.
