Career Ready has provided our school with a structured model for employer engagement

It is refreshing to engage and motivate students in school alongside volunteers who are really investing in young people.

Who are you?

My name is Kate Forrest and I’m the Assistant Headteacher and Career Ready Coordinator of the logistics centre at West Derby School. I won the North West Santander Employability Champion Award in 2016.

What does your role involve?

Creating as many opportunities as possible for students to gain experience of the logistics industry, as well as gain insights into businesses.

What is the most important part of your role?

Being at the centre of communication between students, school staff, employers, Career Ready contacts and a calendar!

What are the benefits for your school of being involved with Career Ready?

Career Ready has provided our school with a structured model for employer engagement. Identifying and developing the skills for career success is embedded in the programme.

Working with Career Ready means that we are able to extend links to local and global businesses, developing productive and effective relationships.

We have established a good rapport with companies which has led us to be able to branch out to other departments and staff within the organisation.

Our Career Ready students have an elevated status within the school due to the activities and opportunities they are involved in and this really helps to inspire others.

How does it feel have won this award?

I’m very proud – the students and staff at West Derby School have gained so much from the Career Ready experience and have made long lasting relationships with local, national and international businesses.

What is the most rewarding part of your role?

Seeing the students discovering new opportunities and realising their own abilities and self-confidence, as well as seeing them develop a positive image of themselves in the workplace. Ultimately seeing them during their internship is the 'jewel in the crown.'
