Kirsty McNeil, a Team Manager at Santander, is a Career Ready mentor to Nicole at Eastbank Academy. Here, she shares her experience of helping Nicole develop the skills, confidence and experience to kick-start a successful future.
I wanted to get a bit more involved with Santander’s charitable activities and becoming part of Career Ready seemed like a natural fit. I was looking for a new challenge and I have younger nieces so I jumped at the chance to get involved.
Mentoring Nicole has quite simply been one inspiring moment after another. I thought I would give up a few minutes of my time each week to have a chat with a student, but the reality has been that I have helped someone determine their future and given them the necessary skills to go out into the world and be the best they can be.
I’ve helped make Nicole realise how talented and capable she actually is. She has become an incredible young lady – and I feel lucky to have been able to guide her onto her chosen career path.
Watching Nicole go from strength to strength – excelling in her internship, getting a job, being accepted to university – has been so rewarding. I have gained a friend from the experience and will continue to support Nicole in whatever ways she requires.
I’d 100% recommend getting involved with Career Ready if you’re after a rewarding volunteering experience. The people behind the scenes are so passionate about the development of the students that it’s hard not to become the same.
