This programme gives people from a variety of organisations the opportunity to build strong relationships with the workforce of the future.
Who are you?
My name is Stephen Hosking, I’m a Regional Partner at What Group and a LAB Member and Mentor at Prior Pursglove College in Guisborough. In 2016 I was awarded Volunteer of the Year.
Why did you get involved in Career Ready?
I want to support my community and in particular the young people who are the life blood of the region.
Throughout my own career I have been supported by many people in a formal and informal way, through mentoring and guidance. If I can help young people develop their confidence, share my knowledge and experience and let them see that they can achieve anything they wish in their careers – no matter where they are from – then it is worthwhile.
What has been your biggest achievement with Career Ready?
There are many things I’m proud of but helping establish a new programme at Prior Pursglove is one of the biggest achievements. I was able to pass on my experience to set the new group up and then see it develop and grow.
I’ve since been able to use this knowledge to support another new programme launch at Harlepool Sixth Form College.
Why would you recommend supporting Career Ready to other employers?
It is hugely rewarding, great fun and most of all you can give something back.
This programme gives people from a variety of business, educational, private and public sector organisations the opportunity to build strong relationships with the workforce of the future – through a very structured process.
You see the students grow and gain confidence as well as develop communication, people and life skills through the work experience and mentor programme.
How does it feel to be recognised as Volunteer of the Year?
I’m very proud to have won this award – it means that I am making a difference through working with the Career Ready programme.
