Dave Davies, Director of Debt Finance at Barclays, is a Career Ready mentor, LAB member and our 2016 Volunteer of the Year. Here, he shares his experience of giving young people the skills, confidence and experience to kick-start his successful future.
I’m passionate about supporting education initiatives, especially those which support students transition from education to employment. Volunteering with Career Ready was therefore ideal for me as it meant that I could play an active part in something I believe in.
The fact that they work across the UK also allowed me to get involved in a college near to where I live, and subsequently become more involved in Career Ready activities across the west midlands region. The way the programme is set up also allowed me to use my network of contacts from my day job to support Career Ready and the local colleges – a perfect match to my skills and experiences.
I’d say that my biggest achievement with Career Ready has been working with Charlotte Wright from Career Ready, as well as my colleagues Jo-Ann Bramston from Royal Mail and Nigel Davis from Genesis DM, to shape the regional strategy so that we can make a positive difference to the whole region.
I’ve also had the chance to support students directly through presentations and my role on the LAB, and most recently as a mentor – which is why I wanted to get involved in the first place.
Becoming part of Career Ready is something which I’d recommend to anyone looking to make a difference and help young people to transition from education to employment. It is easy to get involved, and you can give as much or as little time as you are able to do – it all makes a difference!
