Karen Stewart, HR and Office Administrator at Wacker Nuesen Ltd, shares her experience of being a Career Ready mentor at Weston Road Academy.
I wanted to get involved in the mentoring scheme because I feel passionately that young people should be supported to achieve their full potential. And, from a company perspective, we wanted to forge links with our local secondary school.
Even after a few sessions, it is clear that the students are starting to think about their next steps after school. It’s starting to give them the knowledge, confidence and realisation that if they work hard and stay focused, they can achieve their goals and dreams.
Being a Career Ready mentor has given me the personal satisfaction of taking part of something worthwhile that can have a positive impact on a young person’s life. It’ s also expanded my network of contacts in the local business community, and it’ll hopefully help with future recruitment for any apprenticeship vacancies within our company.
