My internship at Wates has completely changed my view of the construction industry

During my time at Wates I was trusted with work that was both intriguing and sometimes challenging – it wasn’t a case of just being given ‘busy work’.

Ismaeel from Loreto Sixth Form College enjoyed a Think Build internship at Wates through the Career Ready programme. Here, he shares how the experience has provided him with the skills, confidence and qualities to kick-start a successful career.

My internship at Wates has completely changed my view of the construction industry. Before I had a somewhat negative view of the construction industry and didn’t really consider it as an option for my future. But after my time working there, I feel as though I have a much better understanding of the type of work which goes on and I’m much more open to the idea of working in the industry.

During my time at Wates, I was trusted with work that was both intriguing and sometimes challenging – it wasn’t a case of just being given ‘busy work’.

Having to work to deadlines on work which would be useful for my line manager actually felt great – it felt rewarding to finish a task to a high standard to a deadline.

I think that the work and responsibility I was given during my time at Wates really shows the importance of internships for young people -they give you valuable transferable skills that will be beneficial in the future and allow us to do hands-on work which can help you decide if a particular field or industry is the right career path for you.

Getting involved with Career Ready – and taking advantage of the opportunities they provide – is something which I’d tell anyone to do. My internship was a really enjoyable experience that will help me in the future, as being able to experience work, get references and build your skills looks fantastic on your CV and application for university…you just need to work hard and try and capitalise on the experience!
