Representatives from Career Ready presented at the second conference from SHD Logistics at ZSL London Zoo on Thursday 15 October, alongside former Deputy Prime Minister Lord John Prescott and industry experts.
The conference, which saw keynote speeches from Andrew Griffiths, Managing Director of Prologis UK, and Bernard Molloy, Global Industrial Logistics Director at Unipart Logistics, was attended by more than 100 delegates.
Ian Nichol, National STEM Development Manager, spoke about how the Think Logistics initiative aims to raise the profile of the logistics industry with young people and increase their awareness of the career pathways available to them..
He said: "The SHD Logistics conference was a real success for Career Ready and Think Logistics. The conference delegates were able to discuss their suggestions to improve careers advice about the industry with students from West Derby School which proved very worthwhile."
Career Ready student Adam Albones, who now hopes to pursue a career within logistics, gave a presentation about how his internship experience on the Career Ready programme opened his eyes to a sector he hadn’t previously considered working within.
Students from West Derby School also acted as the facilitators for the group task, encouraging delegates to think creatively about recruitment and produce a 60 second elevator pitch to attract a school leaver into their sector.
To finish the conference Lord Prescott was interviewed by Dr Peter Waterman, Pop Idol Judge and member of The Northern Freight & Logistics Study Private Sector Reference Group. Lord Prescott reminded the audience that “Rick Astley and Simon Cowell were once apprentices!”
