DAF Trucks host Think Logistics Steering Group

The Think Logistics Steering Group held its first meeting of 2015 at the DAF Trucks site in Leyland in January. Attendees included a range of logistics employers, representatives from professional bodies such as the Chartered Institute of Logistics and logistics training companies.

John Gilligan Sales Manager for DAFTrucks hosted the meeting and arranged a factory tour. He gave the following endorsement of the Think Logistics Initiative:

"DAF have been proud to support Think Logistics from its early inception. It is a great initiative for the industry and companies involved, helping to ensure a steady flow of fresh young talent. It is also great for the schools, giving their pupils real exposure to an exciting industry and helping them make informed choices for their futures."

The Think Logistics project has received funding from the Edge Foundation to raise awareness of the industry and its career pathways with young people aged 16-19. As part of our commitment to Think Logistics, we are planning to open five logistics Career Ready centres in the North East, Yorkshire and Humberside, Greater Manchester, East Midlands and the South West by September 2015 and to deliver Think Logistics workshops to 1,000 young people by May 2016.

DAF Trucks are the market leading supplier of HGV products to the UK so have a strong interest in a thriving logistics sector in the UK and a number of the companies that are, or have become, part of Think Logistics are also our key customers.

DAF products for the UK are, in general, all built at the Leyland Trucks facility in the town of Leyland, our full range of LF, CF and XF models from 7.5 tonne chassis cabs to 44 tonne tractor units– Leyland Trucks also builds all the lighter (7.5 tonne to 18 tonne) LF chassis wherever they are going in the world – That is 14000-15000 trucks per year being manufactured in Britain to the highest quality standards and being sent as far afield as Australia or Taiwan.

We have very much enjoyed hosting a number of visits to the Leyland Trucks facility as part of our on-going support of Think Logistics and hope to have given some enjoyment and perhaps inspiration to those who have been involved.

DAF Trucks and Leyland Trucks are both part of the very successful Paccar organisation – A global technology company that also builds and markets the Kenworth and Peterbilt truck brands in the USA.
