Growing employer support in Scotland to transform young people's social capital & opportunities

A growing number of employers across Scotland have signed up to support the 2019-21 Career Ready programme, providing young people in S5 &S6 with the employability experiences and opportunities they need to kickstart their future careers.

A  total of 330  local and national employers across Scotland, from over 20 industry sectors, now provide one-to-one mentoring, paid internships, skills masterclasses and workplace visits to 1,350 students from 38% of secondary schools.

With our aim that every Career Ready student progresses to a sustained, positive post-school destination,  the Career Ready programme helps senior phase students make informed, confident career choices, by giving each of them access to real experiences and opportunities of employment nurtured through mentoring, masterclasses and a paid internship.

By connecting them with volunteers from business, students develop work-related skills and their social capital, alongside the attitudes and behaviours to allow them to stand out in an ever-changing and competitive jobs market.  The high-quality experiences that employers provide fosters our nation’s young talent and increasingly leads to jobs and apprenticeships with them.

An incredible 98% move into positive post-school destinations and the most up to date data from Skills Development Scotland for Career Ready participants reveals:

  • Higher Education 45%
  • Employment 24%
  • Further Education 15%
  • Modern & Graduate Level  Apprenticeships 11%
  • Self Employed / Other 3%

Career Ready in Scotland is a partnership, working closely with local authorities, schools, employers and Developing the Young Workforce teams to transform the lives of young people in: Aberdeen; Aberdeenshire; Clackmannanshire; Dundee; East Lothian; Edinburgh; Falkirk; Fife; Glasgow; Midlothian; Moray; Perth & Kinross; Stirling; West Lothian.

To initiate the start of the 2019-2021 programme, students enjoyed the opportunity to meet their newly appointed Career Ready mentor and network with other people from the world of work at city/area-wide launch events. The first of 9 launches took place in Moray on September 23, with the further events being held across Scotland throughout September and October.

The start of the 2019-21 programme cohort is another inspirational point in the Career Ready programme, bringing to fruition the commitment and passion of a huge number of people and organisations.  Playing our part in connecting young people in Scotland with employers is a privilege and allows us  to ensure that young people get the best possible chance for a successful and rewarding career alongside employers playing a vital role in boosting social mobility, developing social capital and widening and diversifying their pool of talent.
