#NotJustforBoys campaign encourages young women to consider careers in “male dominated” industries

Career Ready is supporting a new campaign led by the Department of Work and Pensions to encourage young women to consider careers within traditionally male dominated industries. 

Not Just For Boys, a social media campaign, aims to stop Britain’s young women missing out on lucrative growth industries through a survey asking young people aged 13 – 26 about their career aspirations.

The survey also asks about their perceptions of barriers in industries likely to have an increasing number of job vacancies in the future. It targets the first generation of people who have grown up with access to social media networks and career role models.  

Employment Minister, Priti Patel, said:

“This generation of young people are the first to grow up immersed in social media – there has never been more opportunity for young people to have access to the stories of successful role models across the world in every career imaginable.

“There are more women in work than ever before, however I fear that this generation will still face some of the same barriers that their Gen Y and Baby Boomer mothers and grandmothers did when trying to get into some careers that are typically monopolised by men.

“I want all girls to grow up knowing that they can have any career that they want.”

Research reveals that around 12 million job opportunities will open up in the UK over the next decade alone, many of them in industries where women are underrepresented, such as engineering and IT and telecommunications.

Career Ready is committed to increasing the numbers of young people, particularly girls, going into careers in science, technology and engineering. There are currently more than 800 students studying STEM subjects and undertaking the Career Ready programme. Of the 441 students graduating from the programme in 2015, 41 per cent are girls.

"There's nothing like hearing someone passionate about their job to make a young person think 'I want to be like her'. This campaign will open the eyes of young women to well-paid jobs in industries they might never have considered. 

"We have seen this with our students on visits and internships with companies like Diageo. And once they have the ambition, they work harder to guarantee success."

Career Ready are also a signatory to the Your Life campaign to encourage more girls to take up STEM careers.
