Scottish award winners complete paid internships with Standard Life

Students from across Scotland have begun paid internships at Standard Life – their prize for winning the Standard Life Sir Winfried Bischoff Student of the Year Award.

The regional winners, who were all second year students on the Career Ready programme, were selected from Edinburgh, Glasgow, Perth & Kinross, the North East and Moray. Nyameye Otoo, a Career Ready graduate from Old Machar Academy, was a winner in 2015 and  was unable to take up his internship last year.

Nyameye said: “I’m really enjoying my internship at Standard Life. Everyone I work with has been really helpful.

“It’s also been a great experience meeting all the other Career Ready interns.”

Standard Life has supported the core Career Ready programme since 2013. This year, they generously offered internships to the award winners alongside hosting 20 other Career Ready interns over the summer period.

Sandy Macdonald, Head of Sustainability at Standard Life, said: “As well as supporting students to make a great transition from school to work, Career Ready is good for our business.

"The young people make a really positive impression on our workplace culture, it’s a tangible way for our people to use their skills to get involved with their local community, and it helps us build links with the future talent we want to choose to work for us in years to come.”

Ryan Thorne, Career Ready student at Holyrood Academy, was the winner for Glasgow, and later won the overall national prize. He said: “Since starting at Standard Life I’ve been working on many new and exciting projects – I’m continuing to become Career Ready.”

Ryan’s twin brother, Conor, added: “My experience at Standard Life has been massively rewarding – Career Ready is the gift that keeps giving!”
