Tomorrows Engineers: Student Spotlight

During her time on the Career Ready programme Lauren attended a number of work experience days, organised by her mentor at local engineering companies, offering her a taste of what it is like to work as a Chemical Engineer; a career that Lauren is now set on pursuing. Lauren believes that thanks to the Career Ready masterclasses and her involvement with her mentor, she is now focused on a career within engineering.

When Lauren joined the Career Ready programme, she was a shy student who was unable to talk to others and was extremely lacking in self-confidence. However, having taken part in the programme she is now able to talk in front of large crowds with confidence. She has represented Franklin College at many events, including an open evening, and has attended various different sessions at local schools, raising students’ awareness of STEM subjects.

SLauren was always well liked by staff and her fellow students but the Career Ready programme encouraged her to push herself regularly out of her comfort zone, aiming to improve her confidence and increase her employability skills.  She acted as a ‘buddy’ to other STEM Career Ready students and found her experience also helped to develop her confidence.

Lauren is now at University studying Chemical Engineering and is continuing to develop the networks that she has made whilst on the Career Ready programme in order to gain some more work experience and to continue improving her employability skills.
