Tomorrows Engineers: Student Spotlight

Matthew Dark from Redcar in Middlesbrough embarked on the Engineering Expressway programme  at Redcar & Cleveland College. During Matthew’s time on the course he had multiple workshops where he was given the opportunity to have his engineering skills put to the test.

It was during one of the workshops that Matthew says his passion for Engineering really grew. Employers from the local Engineering industry would visit the students on the programme and give them guidance to help them prepare for the world of work. He realised just how tight the competition for jobs can be and how small a margin he had for error.

Matthew says: "I am in a great debt to Career Academies UK. The BTEC Level 2 Engineering Course at Redcar & Cleveland College really opened my eyes to the world of Engineering. The course introduced me to almost all fields of engineering, and allowed me to get hands on and test the skills I had learned in the workshop."

For Matthew, his time on the Engineering Course showed him all aspects of the trade. He broadened his knowledge and understanding of an industry that is growing rapidly, but most importantly the course helped Matthew gain vital skills to set him up for the world of work. Matthew added: "Our studies weren't purely theoretical, we were given many opportunities to take part in practical activities such as welding, brazing and electronic work."

Matthew hopes to utilise the experience he has gained whilst on the programme to go onto University to explore Engineering further. Matthew added “I can’t wait to put into practice everything I have learned on the programme.”
