One of the most popular winners in the Motor Transport Awards 2016 had to be Think Logistics and Career Ready. They won the Partnership Award for their pioneering work to teach school children the many career opportunities the industry has to offer. If you haven’t heard of Think Logistics, you haven’t been reading Motor Transport recently!
Steve Hobson, Editor of Motor Transport
Career Ready is working with a group of logistics companies to deliver 'Think Logistics' an industry-led initiative that aims to raise the profile of the logistics industry with young people and increase their awareness of the career pathways available to them within the sector.
With Steve Granite’s infectious passion for trucks and transport and with his unwavering determination to attract a new generation to what is such a dynamic industry, we have an irresistible combination with genuine potential to open the eyes of young people to a range of job opportunities they may not have considered previously.
Ray Ashworth, Managing Director of DAF Trucks
The ‘Think Logistics’ initiative was originally established by Steve Granite, Managing Director of Abbey Logistics Group in Liverpool, and initial funding was provided by The Edge Foundation. Steve's aim was to help bridge the gap between young people who are looking to get into a rewarding career and Logistics companies looking for young people. The initiative has been supported by a range of companies who formed a steering group to manage the process. These companies include:
- Abbey Logistics Group
- Bibby Distribution
- Caterpillar UK
- Chartered Institute of Logistics & Transport (CILT)
- CM Downton
- DAF Trucks (who announced a three year sponsorship deal in May 2015)
- DHL Freight
- Eddie Stobart
- Freight Transport Association (who announced a three year sponsorship deal in September 2015)
- Motor Transport Magazine
- Matthew Kibble Transport
- The National Logistics Academy (who announced a three year sponsorship deal in September 2016)
- Road Haulage Association (RHA)
- Rhys Davies Logistics
Think Logistics is an inspired project led by its founder Steve Granite aimed at making this industry understandable to the next generation of drivers, managers and technicians. FTA is pleased to be supporting and helping develop the project and delivering programmes at this scale across the country to the key audience of 16-19 year olds, as part of our skills development campaign.
James Hookham, FTA Deputy Chief Executive
Career Ready is working with the Think Logistics steering group to establish logistics Career Ready centres across the UK. The first centre, at West Derby School in Liverpool, launched in September 2014. Five further logistics centres are launching in September 2015 in the North East of England, the East Midlands, the South West, Humberside and Greater Manchester. Career Ready has a target to open 50 logistics centres by the end of 2018.
We are also working with logistics employers to deliver 'Think Logistics' workshops to 1,000 young people by May 2016. At the 2015 Skills Show, FTA produced a short film explaining just why they think it's so important to promote logistics careers to young people.
