AstraZeneca STEM Student of the Year Award Nomination Pack

The Career Ready STEM Student of the Year Award, sponsored by AstraZeneca, recognises the students who have made the most progress towards a career in a STEM industry during and thanks to the Career Ready programme. We are looking for students who can inspire others to consider STEM careers with their stories.

SUBMIT NOMINATION

Students can be nominated by their Coordinator, a member of their school/college Senior Management Team, Local Advisory Board or their Mentor. One finalist will be selected in each of the following categories:

  • Science
  • Technology
  • Engineering

There will be one overall winner.

Prizes

The finalists and overall winner will be announced at the national Career Ready Awards Dinner in London on 2 April 2019. The finalists will receive a cash prize and an engraved plaque. The overall winner will receive an all expenses overseas trip.

Eligibility

Nominated students must:

  • be studying the Career Ready programme
  • have successfully completed at least a four week (or equivalent) STEM work placement
  • have had an ongoing relationship with their mentor
  • be available to travel overseas during August/September 2019. We require parental permission and the winner should have a valid passport

Award criteria

The AstraZeneca STEM Student of the Year Award recognises the students who have made the most progress on their STEM career journey. As part of the nomination form, you will be asked to provide a written statement (500 words maximum) explaining how you think your student has made significant progress and shown commitment to a career in a STEM industry.

This is your chance to ensure your nominated student stands out. To do this, you could consider some of the following points in your statement:

  • What STEM career the student is aiming for and why he/she has chosen that career
  • How the Career Ready experience has impacted on his/her choice of career e.g. workplace visits, mentor, masterclasses, work experience etc.
  • Any other STEM activities the student has taken part in

Nomination and judging process

To nominate your student, please complete the online nomination form by the published deadline: Monday 18 February 2019. Any incomplete nominations or nominations received after that time will not be considered. All nominations will be acknowledged by email.

Those nominees selected to go forward to the national judging process will be invited to an on-line national judging interview in early March where they will be interviewed by a panel for approximately 30 minutes and asked to deliver a presentation – we suggest a maximum of six PowerPoint slides.

The decision of the judging panel will be final and there will be no appeal procedure.
